Trinidad is pure energy — home of doubles, soca fetes, and the Greatest Show on Earth.
What to Expect
Trinidad Carnival is the original — known as 'The Greatest Show on Earth' and the world's most authentic carnival celebration. Monday and Tuesday on the road in Port of Spain are unlike anything else: tens of thousands of masqueraders, the Road March blasting from competing trucks, J'ouvert still in your bones from the 4am start before. The entire season — Panorama, Dimanche Gras, calypso tents — is a cultural education you cannot get anywhere else.
J'ouvert kicks off at 4:00am on Carnival Monday — paint, mud, powder and pure energy
Road March spans Port of Spain city centre across full Monday and Tuesday
Panorama: the world's premier steelpan competition — Saturday before Carnival, 60–80 bands, 75–200 musicians each
Dimanche Gras (Sunday night): Kings & Queens costume competition + National Calypso Monarch finals
Pre-season highlights — Stick Fighting Finals at Skinner Park, pan yard limes, calypso tents
Fete season runs 6+ weeks: cooler fetes, all-inclusives, boat rides from New Year to Carnival Tuesday
Local food essentials: doubles, bake and shark, macaroni pie, callaloo Sunday lunch

When to Book
Mas band registration for top bands (Tribe, YUMA) opens in August–September the year before carnival — sometimes selling out within an hour. Book flights as soon as registration opens. Popular fetes go on sale from October onwards and the best events sell out months ahead. Carnival 2026 falls on February 16–17; the Panorama steelpan competition takes place the Saturday before. Do not plan Trinidad carnival in December for the following February — you will already be too late for the best options.
