What to Expect
Grenada Spicemas is the carnival for people who want to go deeper. The Jab Jab tradition — thousands of oil-covered revellers in the pre-dawn streets — is one of the most powerful and meaningful experiences in the Caribbean. Smaller, rawer and more community-rooted than Trinidad or Barbados, with a dedicated Children's Carnival Frolic, a competitive Soca Monarch and Panorama featuring up to 100 musicians on stage at once.
J'ouvert & Monday Nite Mas: Jab-Jab bands in oil, paint and chocolate — ancestral and electric
Fancy Mas (Tue): intricate beadwork, feathers and dazzling embellishments parade St George's
Soca Monarch split into Power Soca (135+ bpm) and Groovy Soca (slower, 134 bpm and below)
Panorama: up to 100 musicians on stage, rhythmically playing steel pan in competition
Children's Carnival Frolic (ages 3–16): a full mini-carnival with mas, pageantry and costumes

When to Book
Spicemas typically runs the second week of August — in 2025 the dates were August 11–12 for the main mas days, with Soca Monarch on August 8, Panorama on August 9, and Dimanche Gras on August 10. Mas band registration opens January–March. Flights to Grenada (GND) are best booked 4–5 months in advance — direct routes from the UK are limited so prices can spike. Book accommodation early for Spicemas weekend; Grand Anse and St George's are the best base areas.
