Jamaica Carnival (Bacchanal Jamaica) is high-energy, fete-heavy and set against the backdrop of one of the most culturally rich islands in the world. The road march is excellent, but the fetes — particularly the beach parties — are what most people come back for.

Getting Around
Only use taxis with red PPV plates — those are the licensed, insured ones. White 'P' plates are also licensed; anything else is not.
Route taxis run fixed routes for a set fare and pick up multiple passengers along the way; they are how most people actually travel.
Knutsford Express is the one to know for longer trips — air-conditioned coaches on a fixed schedule with proper terminals, linking Kingston, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril.
Kingston has a government bus network covering the city reasonably well.
Driving is on the left. Roads outside the main corridors can be rough, so think twice about self-driving at night.

When to Book
Mas band registration for Jamaica Carnival typically opens October–December the year before. Flights from the UK to Kingston are best booked 3–4 months in advance. Top fete tickets (especially beach events) go on sale from January and sell out well ahead of the April dates — buy as soon as you have booked flights. Stay in New Kingston for the easiest access to events.
