What to Expect
Mas Domnik — 'The Real Mas' — is Dominica's carnival, rooted in African and French heritage and recognised as one of the most culturally authentic festivals in the Caribbean. Born from the masquerade and street dancing of enslaved people as an expression of freedom, it attracts visitors from around the world for a cultural explosion of music, art and dance unlike anything else in the region.

Culminates with a symbolic Burial ritual on Ash Wednesday
Sensé (BwaBwa): traditional costumed performances rooted in African heritage
Lapeau Kabwit Bands: traditional drumming groups that are central to the celebration
Calypso and Bouyon music — Bouyon is Dominica's own high-energy indigenous genre
Months of pre-carnival build-up: calypso shows, village festivals and pageants
One of Dominica's three signature events — small island, enormous cultural pride

Mas band registration typically opens November–January. Arrive a few days early to experience the pre-carnival calypso shows and village festivals.
