How to Choose a Mas Band in Trinidad: Tribe, YUMA, Bliss and More Compared

Choosing a mas band is one of the most important decisions of your Trinidad Carnival experience. Your band determines your costume, your road march route, your truck, your drinks package and — to a large extent — the vibe of your entire Monday and Tuesday.

Here is an honest breakdown of the main bands.

What Is a Mas Band?

A mas band is the organisation you register with to play mas (participate in the road march) on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. You register for a specific section within the band, which gives you your costume. On the day, you follow your band's truck through the road march route in Port of Spain.

Bands vary enormously in size, price, crowd, vibe and organisational quality. Choosing the right one matters.

Tribe

Best for: First-timers who want organisation and security. People who prioritise costume quality and a well-run experience.

Tribe is widely considered the gold standard of Trinidad mas. It is not the biggest band, but it is consistently the most organised. The experience is well-run, the costume quality is high, the crowd is diverse and international, and the security within the band is notable.

The trade-off: Tribe sells out within hours of registration opening — sometimes within 30–60 minutes. You need to be ready at the exact moment registration opens (usually around August–September the year before) or you will miss out. Prices are at the higher end.

Price range: Approximately £350–£700+ depending on section.

YUMA

Best for: People who want a premium, high-energy experience with a slightly younger, more diverse international crowd.

YUMA (Young Unique Mas Artists) has built an incredible reputation in recent years. The costumes are beautiful, the fetes throughout the week are top tier, and the organisation is excellent. The crowd is notably multicultural and international.

The trade-off: Also sells out very fast. Similar pricing to Tribe. The YUMA experience extends beyond just the road march — their week of events is part of the package.

Price range: Approximately £380–£750+ depending on section.

Bliss

Best for: People who want a slightly more affordable option without sacrificing experience quality.

Bliss is a mid-tier band that offers excellent value. The costumes are good, the route is well-managed, and registration is a little more accessible than Tribe or YUMA. Good choice if you miss out on the top-tier bands.

Price range: Approximately £280–£500.

Harts

Best for: People who want a larger band with a great atmosphere and strong local following.

Harts is one of the largest bands and has a long history in Trinidad carnival. The costume sections are numerous and varied, the prices are reasonable, and the energy of a large band on the road is an experience in itself.

Price range: Approximately £250–£500.

Fantasy

Best for: People who want to experience J'ouvert alongside a reputable mas band for the full week experience.

Fantasy is known for both their road march band and their J'ouvert band. Registering with Fantasy can give you access to a cohesive week-long experience rather than piecing together different bands for different events.

Price range: Approximately £250–£450 for road march sections.

How to Register

  1. Follow the band on social media — they announce registration dates there first
  2. Set a calendar reminder for registration day and be online early
  3. Have your payment method ready — popular sections sell out mid-registration
  4. Register as a group if travelling with others — some bands allow group registration, but coordinate carefully
  5. Choose your section carefully — review photos of all sections before the day, not on the day

Key Questions to Ask Before Choosing

  • What is included? (Costume, drinks, meals, transport, security)
  • When does registration open?
  • What is the refund policy if you cannot attend?
  • Where is the band's meeting point on the day?
  • What is the band's J'ouvert option if you want that too?
