What to Expect
Notting Hill Carnival is 'The Greatest Community-led Event on the Planet' — Europe's biggest street festival and the Caribbean diaspora's most visible cultural celebration in the UK. Two million people across two days on Ladbroke Grove and Portobello Road: soca trucks, mas bands, Brazilian bands, sound systems, live stages, jerk chicken, and a community that has been doing this since 1966.
2026 dates: Sunday 30 August (Families & Children's Day) and Monday 31 August (Adults Day) — both free
Saturday 29 August: UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition (tickets required)
Sunday features J'ouvert, Children's Parade and Adults 'Dutty Mas' segment
Monday is Adults Parade day — mas bands, judging, and the full road march experience
Sound systems, live stages, Brazilian bands and soca trucks line the route
Free to attend — mas band registration around £50–£150 if you want to play mas
August Bank Holiday weekend — rain is possible, layers advisable

When to Book
Notting Hill Carnival 2026 is August 30–31 (Steel Band Competition August 29). The main festival is free to attend — no tickets needed. If you want to play mas, register with a mas band from around May onwards. The Steel Band Competition requires tickets and books up fast. Accommodation in Notting Hill and surrounding areas becomes expensive and scarce for the Bank Holiday weekend — book 2–3 months ahead if you are travelling into London for it.
