What to Expect
The West Indian American Day Carnival on Eastern Parkway is the largest Caribbean carnival in North America, and the figure people quote — a million or more on Labor Day — is not an exaggeration. But the part Trinidadians will tell you not to miss is J'ouvert in the small hours before it, which is a separate, older, rawer event with its own route and its own rules.

Getting Around
The subway is the only sensible way to reach Eastern Parkway — the 2, 3, 4 and 5 lines all stop along the parade route.
Expect station closures and exit restrictions along the Parkway on Labor Day; check the MTA notices the week before.
J'ouvert starts before dawn with its own route, so plan that journey separately from the parade.
Stay in Brooklyn rather than Manhattan if you can — the pre-dawn start makes the commute matter.
Driving and parking anywhere near the route on the day is not realistic.

When to Book
Carnival falls on Labor Day Monday, the first Monday in September. Flights to New York are plentiful but Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest of the US year — book by spring and sort ESTA well ahead. Accommodation is the real cost here: stay in Brooklyn rather than Manhattan, both for price and because you want to be near Eastern Parkway for a pre-dawn J'ouvert start. Mas band registration opens in early summer. Treat J'ouvert and the parade as two separate events with two separate plans; people routinely assume they are the same thing and miss one.
