Germany's Caribbean carnivals like Berlin and Hamburg bring sound system trucks island flags and dancehall to European streets.
What to Expect
Berlin's Karneval der Kulturen is not a German Karneval in the Rhineland sense — it is a street carnival built by Berlin's migrant communities, and the Caribbean contingent is a real part of it. It runs over the Whitsun weekend in Kreuzberg, free to attend, with the big parade on Pentecost Sunday and four days of street festival around it.
2027 runs 14–17 May, over the Whitsun/Pentecost weekend, in Berlin-Kreuzberg
The main parade falls on Pentecost Sunday and is the centrepiece of the four days
Over 5,000 participants from nearly every continent — Caribbean, African, Latin American, Asian
Free to attend: no tickets, no grandstands, no costume registration fees
Distinct from Rhineland Karneval in Cologne and Düsseldorf, which runs in February

Getting Around
Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn are the way to Kreuzberg — Hallesches Tor, Gneisenaustraße and Südstern put you on the route.
A single AB-zone ticket covers the whole central area, and the network runs all night at weekends.
Expect the U1 and U7 to be extremely busy on Pentecost Sunday — the parade draws very large crowds.
Driving is on the right, but a car in Kreuzberg during the carnival is a liability rather than a help.
The parade route and surrounding streets close to traffic for the weekend.

When to Book
Karneval der Kulturen falls on the Whitsun weekend — 14 to 17 May in 2027 — with the parade on Pentecost Sunday. Berlin is an hour and a half from London and flights are cheap all year, so this is by some distance the most affordable carnival on the site. Whitsun is a public holiday across Germany, so accommodation in Kreuzberg and Neukölln does fill: book by March. There is nothing to register for and nothing to pay at the parade. Worth knowing before you book: if you were expecting Cologne-style Karneval with the costumes and the Rosenmontag parade, that is a different event entirely, held in February.
