Virgin Gorda

🎭 Aug 2027 (Emancipation: 2 Aug)

🗺️ Plan this carnival💰 Estimate cost🎭 First time?

Virgin Gorda keeps it small and sweet with local festivals beach cookouts and that slow BVI rhythm.

What to Expect

Virgin Gorda runs its own Emancipation Festival alongside Tortola's, and it is the quieter, more local half of the BVI celebration — a village, a parade and a few hundred people who all know each other, set against The Baths and some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. If Tortola feels like the main event, Virgin Gorda is the one people come back for.

→

Part of the BVI Emancipation Festival — early August, with 2–4 August public holidays in 2027

→

Smaller and more local than Tortola's: village, parade and food fair rather than big stages

→

The Baths — granite boulders and tidal pools — are a 15-minute drive from the festival grounds

→

Spanish Town is the centre; the whole island has under 5,000 residents

→

Easy to pair with Tortola: the ferry between them takes about 30 minutes

Getting Around

Virgin Gorda doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around

→

Open-air safari taxis meet the ferries and cover the main runs between Spanish Town, The Baths and the North Sound.

→

Taxis charge per person at set rates, not by the meter.

→

Driving is on the left; the same temporary BVI licence applies.

→

A hire car is genuinely useful here — the beaches are spread out and taxis are limited and expensive.

→

The ferry to Tortola takes about 30 minutes and runs frequently in daylight, but not late.

When to Book

Virgin Gorda's festival runs alongside Tortola's in early August, with the BVI public holidays on 2–4 August in 2027. Route via Antigua (ANU) or St Thomas (STT), then ferry to Tortola and across to Spanish Town — the hop between the two islands takes about 30 minutes and runs frequently in daylight. Virgin Gorda has very few rooms and August is peak season, so book accommodation by February or stay on Tortola and travel across for the parade. Hire a car if you want The Baths and the beaches as well as the festival; taxis are limited and expensive.
