Tortola in the BVI is quiet beauty sea views and a homegrown festival that feels like pure community.
What to Expect
The BVI Emancipation Festival is two weeks of celebration marking the 1834 abolition of slavery, and Road Town is where it all lands. It straddles the end of July and the start of August, with the first Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in August all public holidays. Moko Jumbies, Festival Village and the August Monday parade are the fixed points; everything else is liming.

Getting Around
Tortola doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around
Safari buses — open-sided trucks with bench seating — run the main routes, departing when full and dropping off wherever you ask.
Taxis are plentiful and unmetered, with set rates per person rather than per trip, so a group costs more than you might expect.
Driving is on the left, and a temporary BVI licence must be bought on top of your own.
Roads over the spine of the island are extremely steep with sharp switchbacks — take an automatic and go slowly.
Ferries link Road Town and West End to Virgin Gorda, St Thomas and St John throughout the day.

When to Book
The BVI Emancipation Festival runs across the last week of July and the first week of August, with the public holidays falling on 2–4 August in 2027. There is no direct UK route: fly to Antigua (ANU) or St Thomas (STT) and connect by light aircraft to Beef Island (EIS), or take the ferry from St Thomas to Road Town. If you route via St Thomas you will pass through US territory, so check ESTA requirements before booking. Accommodation on Tortola is limited and August is peak season — book by March. Troupe registration opens around May.
