What to Expect
St Thomas Carnival is one of the oldest in the US Virgin Islands and the parade through Charlotte Amalie is a proper two-mile road march, with Moko Jumbies on stilts leading the way and quelbe and fungi bands sharing the route with soca trucks. It runs across late April into early May, and the Carnival Village stays open nightly through the whole thing.

Getting Around
St Thomas doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around
Open-air 'safari' taxis are the island's shared transport — converted trucks carrying up to two dozen people, looping between the university, the airport, Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook.
They charge per person, not per trip, so a group of five pays five fares — a short hop across town can add up quickly.
Taxi fares are fixed by destination rather than metered. Check the published rate before boarding.
Driving is on the left — the USVI is the only US territory where that is true, and cars still have the wheel on the left, which takes adjusting to.
Roads outside Charlotte Amalie are steep, narrow and sharply cambered; take an automatic.

When to Book
St Thomas Carnival runs across the last week of April into the first days of May; the Division of Festivals usually confirms exact dates in January, so check before committing. There is no direct UK service to Cyril E. King (STT) — you will connect through Miami, New York or San Juan, and as a US territory you will need ESTA or a US visa even in transit. Sort that before you book anything. Accommodation should be locked in by January, and note that cruise ships dock in Charlotte Amalie through the season, so the town is busy regardless. Mas troupe registration opens around February.
