What to Expect
Sugar Mas is the Caribbean's Christmas carnival — it opens in December and runs through to the New Year, so you are on the road while everyone at home is working through the leftovers. Carnival Village at Warner Park is the hub, downtown Basseterre is the stage, and traditional characters still share the road with modern costume bands. The 2026/27 edition is Sugar Mas 55.

Getting Around
St Kitts doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around
Privately owned vans, brightly painted and often named, run the main routes and will stop anywhere along the road.
They are used mostly by locals rather than visitors, which makes them cheap and a genuinely good way to meet people.
Driving is on the left. A temporary permit is required: about XCD$62.50 for three months, usually arranged through the rental company.
Taxis are unmetered with published rates — agree before boarding.
The ferry to Nevis takes about 45 minutes and runs several times a day from Basseterre.

When to Book
Sugar Mas falls over Christmas and New Year, the single most expensive fortnight of the year to fly. Book flights as early as you can — nine to twelve months out is not excessive for late December, and fares only climb from there. British Airways serves Robert L. Bradshaw International (SKB) seasonally; otherwise connect through Antigua or St Maarten. Accommodation is the other pinch point, because the diaspora comes home for Christmas and the island is small: rooms go long before costumes do. Mas band registration typically opens in October. If you only have a few days, the stretch from Boxing Day J'ouvert through to Las Lap on 2 January is the part to be there for.
