St Eustatius is tiny but proud with festivals that feel like a family reunion and island history in every event.
What to Expect
Statia Carnival is a July festival on an island of about 3,000 people, and that scale is the whole point — everyone takes part, nobody is selling you a package, and the whole thing feels like a village fete that happens to run for a fortnight. It follows Emancipation Day on 1 July, which marks the abolition of slavery across the Dutch Kingdom, and the celebration grows directly out of it.
Held in July — the 2026 edition was the 62nd, running 15 to 27 July
Emancipation Day on 1 July opens the season and is the reason the carnival exists
An island of roughly 3,000 people: the entire population is involved
Carnival Village in Oranjestad hosts the nightly shows, pageants and food stalls
Dutch Caribbean special municipality — the euro is the currency, not the guilder or dollar

Getting Around
St Eustatius doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around
There is no public transport at all. The island has roughly 3,000 people and a handful of roads.
Taxis are informal and few; most visitors arrange transfers through their hotel in advance.
A hire car is the practical option, and the island is small enough that one tank lasts the trip.
Driving is on the right.
Oranjestad is walkable end to end, which covers most of the carnival venues.

When to Book
Statia Carnival runs for roughly two weeks in July, following Emancipation Day on 1 July — confirm exact dates with the island's tourism office, as they shift year to year. Getting there is the hard part: there are no direct flights of any kind, so route through St Maarten (SXM) via Amsterdam or Paris, then take the short Winair hop to F.D. Roosevelt Airport (EUX). Book that connecting leg at the same time as the long haul, because it runs only a few times a day. Accommodation is a handful of small hotels and guesthouses — book by March. Bring euros and cash; card acceptance is limited.
