What to Expect
Batabano is Cayman's national carnival, founded in 1983 and named for the tracks sea turtles leave coming ashore to nest. The main parade moves along the Seven Mile Beach corridor into George Town — one big road day rather than a long season — and the whole thing is unusually polished and easy to navigate, which makes it a sensible first carnival if Trinidad feels like too much too soon.

Public minibuses run from the depot beside the library in George Town, colour-coded by route, covering Seven Mile Beach and the districts.
They are cheap and frequent along the Seven Mile Beach corridor during the day, sparse in the evenings.
Driving is on the left and a temporary Cayman permit is required with your own licence.
Taxis are unmetered with government-set rates and are expensive — agree the fare first.

When to Book
Batabano falls in late April or May, with the main road parade on a Saturday — confirm the exact date with the organisers before booking, as it has moved around within that window in recent years. British Airways flies direct from London Heathrow to Owen Roberts International (GCM), which is rare for a carnival this size and worth booking early for the fare rather than for availability. Be realistic about cost: Cayman is one of the most expensive islands in the Caribbean, and food, drink and accommodation will eat your budget long before the costume does. Seven Mile Beach hotels are the priciest option; George Town guesthouses and condo rentals cost considerably less. Mas band registration opens around February.
