Carriacou and Petite Martinique serve small island mas with big heart Shakespeare mas boat rides and true village spirit.

What to Expect

Carriacou's carnival has something no other carnival on earth has: Shakespeare Mas. Masked 'kings' in mirrored tunics face off in the street reciting Julius Caesar from memory, and a wrong line earns a lash from a bullwhip across a padded headpiece. UNESCO added it to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2024. The island has fewer than 10,000 people and the carnival runs on the pre-Lenten calendar in February.

Getting Around

Carriacou & Petite martinique doesn't currently have app-based ride-hailing. Local registered taxis are the best option — agree on a price before you get in. Your hotel or guesthouse can usually recommend trusted drivers.

Getting Around

→

The island is small enough to cross in half an hour, and minibuses cover the main Hillsborough routes, leaving when full.

→

Taxis are unmetered and plentiful at the jetty and the airstrip — agree the fare first.

→

Driving is on the left; a Grenadian temporary permit applies here too.

→

The Osprey ferry from Grenada takes about 90 minutes and does not run late, so plan your arrival for daylight.

→

Bring cash. Card acceptance across the island is patchy and ATMs are few.

When to Book

Carriacou follows the pre-Lent calendar, so Carnival Monday and Tuesday fall on 8 and 9 February in 2027. Fly to Maurice Bishop International in Grenada (GND) — British Airways and Virgin both serve it from London — then take the Osprey ferry or the short SVG Air hop across. The ferry takes about 90 minutes and does not run late, so plan your connection in daylight. Accommodation on Carriacou is guesthouses and small inns rather than hotels, and there are not many: book by November. There is nothing to register for — the Shakespeare Mas kings are local and the street is the venue. Bring cash; card acceptance is patchy.
