Belize Carnival is feathers paint and bruk out on the streets backed by Garifuna drums and Central American flavour.

What to Expect

Belize folds its carnival into the September Celebrations — a month of national pride marking St George's Caye Day on the 10th and Independence Day on the 21st. The Carnival Road March through Belize City is the centrepiece, and because Belize is Central American and Caribbean at once, the parade carries Garifuna drumming and punta alongside soca.

Part of the September Celebrations, alongside St George's Caye Day (10 Sep) and Independence Day (21 Sep)

→

J'ouvert starts at 4am at the Belcan Bridge, with the Carnival Road March following at 2pm the same day

→

Usually falls on the first weekend of September — confirm the date, it moves year to year

→

Garifuna drumming and punta share the road with soca — a sound you will not hear elsewhere

→

The only Central American mainland country in the Anglophone Caribbean carnival circuit

Getting Around

→

Former US school buses run the Northern and Western Highways between the main towns — cheap, frequent and the way most Belizeans travel.

→

Belize City's terminal is the hub; services thin out sharply in the evenings.

→

Driving is on the right, unusually for the Anglophone Caribbean.

→

Water taxis from Belize City serve Caye Caulker and San Pedro several times daily — the usual post-carnival move.

→

Agree taxi fares before travelling; they are unmetered and licensed cabs carry green plates.

When to Book

The Carnival Road March usually falls on the first weekend of September, with J'ouvert at 4am and the parade at 2pm on the same day — but the date shifts year to year, so confirm with the National Celebrations Commission before booking. There is no direct UK service to Philip Goldson International (BZE); you will connect through Miami, Houston or Dallas, which means ESTA. September is low season and green season, so accommodation is cheap and rain is likely. Belize City is the carnival, but most visitors base themselves there only for the parade and head to the cayes or inland afterwards.
