Antigua Carnival is one of the longest-running carnival celebrations in the Caribbean. Taking place over ten days in late July and early August, it is a full cultural festival — music competitions, pageants, fetes and one of the most energetic road marches in the region.
If you are looking for a summer carnival option — or want something different from Trinidad in February — Antigua delivers.
When Is Antigua Carnival?
Antigua Carnival runs from late July into the first Tuesday of August. The final weekend is the most intense, with:
- Last Lap (street party, usually Saturday night)
- J'ouvert (Monday morning from approximately 4am)
- Parade of the Bands (Monday and Tuesday)
2026 dates: The Parade of the Bands is scheduled for 3–4 August 2026. J'ouvert falls on the morning of 3 August.
What Makes Antigua Carnival Unique?
The T-Shirt Mas. Antigua is famous for its T-Shirt Mas — masqueraders in matching T-shirts rather than the feather-and-beads costumes seen in Trinidad. It is a more accessible and affordable way to participate. Many bands offer both T-Shirt and costume sections.
The Panorama. Antigua's steelpan competition (Panorama) is one of the highlights of the festival season — a reminder of the deep roots of Caribbean music culture.
The music scene. Antigua has its own vibrant soca scene, and local artists compete fiercely in the Soca Monarch competition in the week leading up to Road March. Winning songs dominate the road.
The beach. After your Road March, you are in Antigua. The island has 365 beaches — one for every day of the year, as the saying goes. Recovery is well catered for.
Playing Mas in Antigua
The main mas bands in Antigua include Xperience, Elite and Onyx. Registration for costume sections typically opens in January or February for an August carnival — significantly later than Trinidad's August-previous-year registration.
Costume prices: Approximately £150–£400 for a full costume section. T-Shirt sections are notably cheaper — around £60–£120.
The affordability of Antigua Carnival (compared to Trinidad or Barbados) is one of its most appealing qualities for first-timers.
J'ouvert in Antigua
Antigua J'ouvert is paint, powder and mud — energetic and joyful. It starts around 4am on Road March Monday and runs until mid-morning. Several J'ouvert bands operate — some with paint, some with powder, some with both. Wear old clothes that you are ready to discard.
The party flows directly into the Parade of the Bands later the same day, so pace yourself.
Getting to Antigua
VC Bird International Airport in Antigua is well-connected. Direct flights from London Gatwick (British Airways) and Manchester run throughout summer. Flights from the US run through New York, Miami and Atlanta.
Return flights from London typically run £500–£800 in July/August if booked several months ahead.
Where to Stay
St John's (the capital) and the resort areas along the northwest coast (Runaway Bay, Dickenson Bay) are the main accommodation zones. For carnival, staying in or close to St John's gives you the easiest access to events. The resort areas are great for beach days and recovery.
Budget Guide
| Item | Approximate Cost | |------|-----------------| | Return flights (UK) | £550–£800 | | Accommodation (5 nights) | £400–£900 | | Mas costume | £150–£400 | | Fete tickets (2–3 events) | £100–£250 | | Food, drink, transport | £200–£400 | | Total | £1,400–£2,750 |
This is significantly more affordable than Trinidad Carnival for a comparable experience.
Tips for First-Timers
- Book flights early — Antigua is popular in August and summer flight prices rise fast
- Decide between costume and T-Shirt Mas — both are valid; T-Shirt is more comfortable in the heat
- Check the official carnival website for the full schedule of events including Panorama and Soca Monarch
- Stay hydrated — August in Antigua is hot and the road march is a full day
- Add beach days to either end of your trip — Antigua's beaches are exceptional
